Test Overview:

Dilated cardiomyopathy affects dogs and is an inherited disorder of the heart muscles. Affected dogs will usually present signs of poor heart function before the age of 3. Affected male dogs will generally develop the disease earlier than affected females (around 1.5 years old compared to 2.4 years old). Affected dogs can become prone to potential fatal arrhythmias from progressive cardiac muscle weakness, dilation of heart chambers, and thinning of heart walls result in poor contractility. Dogs who are affected by the disease will develop clinical signs that range from exercise intolerance, coughing, difficulty breathing, rapid breathing, fatigue, collapse and sudden death. Dogs who don’t die suddenly from the arrhythmias will usually die from congestive heart failure when their heart muscles become too weak to adequately pump blood. Different environmental factors and disease genes can play a part in the development of dilated cardiomyopathy in dogs, therefore, not all dogs who have this disease will have the same genetic Mutation.
