Test Overview:

Approximately 20% of Toy Manchester Terriers and English Toy Terriers are carriers of the juvenile dilated cardiomyopathy (JDCM) mutation. Carriers do not develop the disease but can produce affected puppies if bred to another carrier. To avoid producing affected puppies, carriers should only be bred to dogs tested clear of the mutation. This prevents puppies inheriting two copies of the mutation. It is not recommended to remove all carriers from the breeding pool quickly, as this could reduce genetic diversity in the breed. Responsible breeding balances disease prevention with maintaining healthy gene diversity by using genetic testing results to guide mating decisions. Testing for JDCM, alongside other recommended health tests such as thyroid screening, von Willebrand disease, and xanthinuria, is encouraged prior to breeding. Dogs should be recorded with their test status (Clear, Carrier, or Affected) for transparent breeding and informed planning.
