Test Overview:

Genetic testing for the AIPL1 mutation is essential for breeders of Persian and related breeds (Himalayan, Exotic, Chinchilla, British Shorthair). Cats with two copies of the mutation (affected) should not be bred. Cats with one copy (carriers) should be bred only to cats clear of the mutation to avoid affected offspring. Avoid breeding two carriers together, which risks producing 25% affected kittens per litter. Gradual elimination of the mutation can be achieved through responsible testing and selective breeding. Sharing test results openly among breeders supports health-focused breeding programs.
