Test Overview:

To produce chocolate kittens, both parents must carry the b allele; carriers (heterozygous) appear black but may produce chocolate offspring. To produce cinnamon kittens, both parents must carry the b¹ allele; cinnamon cats have genotype b¹/b¹. Mating two cinnamon cats always produces cinnamon offspring. Cats heterozygous for b/b¹ appear chocolate, as chocolate is dominant over cinnamon. Genetic testing for the B locus alleles is strongly recommended to: Identify carriers of chocolate and cinnamon alleles. Avoid surprises in kitten coat colours. Manage breeding for desired colours responsibly. Avoid breeding only for colour; maintain genetic diversity and avoid health issues by considering the overall genetic background. When breeding chocolate or cinnamon cats, consider the influence of other loci (e.g., dilution, tabby patterns) which can affect coat appearance.

Category:

Trait (Associated with Phenotype)

Gene:

TYRP1

Severity:

It is a trait and so is tested based on preference, not usually for health concerns.

Mode of Inheritance:

Autosomal Recessive

Recommended Screening:

Genetic testing of the TYRP1 gene will reliably determine if a cat is a carrier for the Chocolate & Cinnamon coat colour trait.
