Test Overview:

Do not breed affected dogs (homozygous for the ITGB2 mutation). Avoid breeding two carriers, as this results in a 25% chance per litter of affected puppies. Breed carriers only to clear (non-carrier) dogs, producing some carriers but no affected puppies. Routine genetic screening of breeding stock is highly recommended in Irish Setters and Irish Red and White Setters to identify carriers and improve breed health. Breed clubs and veterinary geneticists support use of DNA testing to reduce mutation frequency while maintaining genetic diversity.

Category:

Immunologic - Associated with the organs and cells of the immune system

Gene:

Integrin subunit beta 2 (ITGB2) on chromosome 31

Variant Detected:

c.107G>C

Severity:

Moderate-Severe. This is a disease with significant welfare impact on the affected animal, in terms of clinical signs and generally reduced life expectancy.

Mode of Inheritance:

Autosomal Recessive

Recommended Screening:

Genetic testing of all breeding Irish setters prior to entering into breeding programs.
