Test Overview:

OCA is typically inherited in an autosomal recessive fashion, meaning two copies of the mutated gene are required for an affected cat. Genetic testing for TYR gene mutations should be performed on breeding cats to identify carriers and affected individuals. Cats with two copies of the mutation (affected) should not be bred due to the health risks and potential welfare concerns linked to albinism. Cats with one copy of the mutation (carriers) can be bred, but only to cats clear of the mutation to avoid producing affected kittens. Breeding two carriers together should be avoided as it risks producing affected offspring. Due to the higher risk of skin and eye problems, breeders should carefully consider health and welfare implications when working with albinism-associated genotypes. Open sharing of genetic test results helps inform breeding decisions and enhances feline welfare.
