Test Overview:

Genetic testing for the MDR1 (ABCB1) mutation in breeding cats is strongly recommended. Cats with two copies of the mutation (affected) should not be bred, as they can produce affected offspring sensitive to common drugs. Cats with one copy (carriers) should only be bred to cats clear of the mutation. Avoid breeding two carriers together as this risks producing affected kittens with two copies of the mutation. If a carrier is bred with a clear cat, about 50% of kittens will be carriers but healthy. Knowledge of a cat’s MDR1 status is important for safe veterinary care, especially when using drugs known to cause adverse reactions in affected cats. Breeders and owners should share test results openly for responsible breeding and medical management.
