Test Overview:

Test all breeding cats for MPS VI severe and mild variants as well as the modifier variant. Cats with two copies of the severe variant (MPSVIs/MPSVIs) will develop severe disease and must not be bred. Cats heterozygous for the severe variant (N/MPSVIs) do not show disease but can pass the mutation; these cats should be bred to clear cats (no mutation) to avoid affected kittens. Cats with one or two copies of the mild variant (N/MPSVIm or MPSVIm/MPSVIm) may carry or mildly express the disease; breeding decisions should consider genotype to avoid mild or more severe disease-producing combinations. Cats with two copies of the modifier variant alone do not develop disease but may have increased cellular granularity; breeding with cats clear of the severe variant is generally safe. Avoid breeding two cats carrying severe variants together. Gradual reduction of disease-causing alleles in the population while maintaining genetic diversity is recommended.

Category:

Metabolic - Associated with the enzymes and metabolic processes of cells

Gene:

ARSB

Variant Detected:

c.1427T>C

Severity:

Moderate-Severe. This is a disease with significant welfare impact on the affected animal, in terms of clinical signs and generally reduced life expectancy.

Mode of Inheritance:

Autosomal Recessive

Recommended Screening:

Genetic testing can determine if a cat is a carrier of Mucopolysaccharidosis Type VI.
